Bullet; Red❀ nervous ❀

Having lived most of her remembered life in the soot-darkened and Ashen-infested lands beyond the wall, Mushroomkit is easily frightened by things that she doesn't immediately recognize, unexpected noises, sudden lights, loud sounds, you name it. Outside of Safe Haven such reflexes kept her alive, but now that she is a kitten safe within the walls, this trait serves as nothing but to make her prime fodder for other kittens' teasing words and pranks.

Bullet; Green❀ loyal ❀

Mushroomkit isn't stupid; she knows that the cats within Safe Haven saved her life by agreeing to take her in. As such, she acknowledges that she owes them her undying loyalty. She also hates the Ashen for killing her mother and father, and the fact that she and the Monarchs are fighting on the same side of the battle certainly enhances this rather vague trait into a solidified, unwavering allegiance to them, the cats within the walls, and their cause.

Bullet; Red❀ snooty ❀

This kitten is sometimes excessively scornful of the lack of experience that kittens born within the walls of Safe Haven have, or the ones who cannot remember what it was like to live outside of the protective stone slopes. This can sometimes lead her to act better than those who have been safe their whole remembered lives, unlike herself.

Bullet; Yellow❀ obedient ❀

Mushroomkit is most definitely obedient, especially when one takes her age into account, an age when most kittens are rebellious. This trait is a product of bad experiences outside the walls before her arrival. Her obedience trickles over into the similar traits of respectful, deferential, and good listener. If an authority figure tells her to do something, she will do it without a second thought. This makes her a valuable soldier, but also a gullible one, should a person in authority over her wish her harm.

Bullet; Red❀ careworn ❀

With her vast remembered experiences of the journey to Safe Haven, Mushroomkit is more aware than most her age of the terrible threat that the cats who are left face, and the overwhelming odds against which they strive daily. This leaves her reticent and depressed at times, withdrawn at others. From this springs her rather pessimistic outlook on life, which translates into words and actions that can be offputting in a place that relies on the wellspring of hope to function.

Bullet; Yellow❀ masculine ❀

Mushroomkit is not a girly-girl in any way, shape, or form. She doesn't feel the need to keep her pelt clean, hardly thinks about her looks, runs around with the boys, and enjoys adventure. The way that this trait expresses itself can be either positive or negative: she can be a bully at times, wanting to show off her strength and prove that, though she may be a girl, she doesn't act like one. Other times, her masculinity can blossom into a fierce protectiveness of those she loves and a leadership aspect that could be honed as she grows.

H I S T O R Y

❀ birth ❀

Mushroomkit’s mother and father, Ravenstep and Long-gaze, loved one another before the Calamity. They had been mates for many moons, living among the clans, but they had yet to produce children, which they truly desired. However, eventually, rather than be disappointed over and over again with every failed attempt, they gave up hope that they would ever become parents, and ceased trying, deciding that all they would ever need was each other.

When the terrible disaster shook the forest, tearing the air and the veil betwixt worlds to pieces, Ravenstep and Long-gaze were separated. After the spinning and heaving of the rebelling world finally stilled, revealing the fetid, mutated wasteland stretching out as far as the eye could see, they searched tirelessly for one another, fighting to escape the Ashen, numb to what the world had become, desiring simply to be back in one another’s arms. Neither of them could imagine facing this new world alone, and neither of them would have ever given up. Ravenstep, for her own part, thanked StarClan that she had not been able to give birth to kittens; who would want to bring a child into a world like this?

After twelve moons of near-constant searching, Ravenstep and Long-gaze found one another again. While exchanging stories, they discovered that they had been missing one another by days sometimes, following in one another's footsteps, switching back and forth, constantly distracted by Ashen, the need for food, and the evil, manipulative forces which saturated the air that they breathed like smoke. However, they were back together again, and to them, that was all that mattered. That night, they built a nest and took comfort in one another, escaping for a little while from the dark reality surrounding them, lost in one another's love. Little did they suspect that along with the evil powers, pure favor had also been flung into the world with the tearing of the veil, a substance which had the power to heal what was broken, restore what was unmade, and grant the deepest wishes of the heart. What a blessing. What a curse.

For Ravenstep's womb had been healed, and she did conceive. Three months later, Mushroomkit was born through pain and suffering, as are we all, and she was born into a dark, dark world.

❀ kittenhood ❀

This tight-knit, incredibly loving family of three were constantly traveling during the introductory moons of Mushroomkit's life. Her first memory is of being carried tenderly on her father's broad shoulders as he walked beside her mother, her parents' tails twined. When she grew observant enough to understand, Mushroomkit received the vague impression that her parents were looking for something, though they never said what it was. Whenever she would ask, they would do their best to distract her or change the subject. Eventually, she began to suspect that even they didn't know what they were looking for. Hope maybe. A new home, where they could start all over. But nothing solid. A parade of endless days driven by survival and exhaustion followed; Mushroomkit had never know anything else. Her parents would remind her that they loved her constantly, sing to her when she was scared, and tell her bedtime stories of that foreign world, the world before the Calamity. Mushroomkit didn't miss the sound of the wind moving through the willow trees the way her mother said she did, and she didn't know what soft green grass would feel like under her paws, the way her father always dreamily described. But it always sounded very nice, and she thought that she would have liked to see it, at least once.

As she grew, the kitten began to feel the gentle but relentless tug on her small heart toward some unknown destination. When she informed her parents of this strange feeling, they finally decided she was ready, and let her know about the Monarch's Call, which had happened before she was born, and the place known as Safe Haven. The name rang of family, friends, hope, and safety. Her mother started to smile more often as they drew closer. Her father told jokes and laughed as they walked. "Life is going to turn around, you'll see." she can remember him saying jauntily, bouncing up and down with each pawstep. "Life's going to turn around, for all of us. We'll have a new life. You'll see." However, like all good things, this time, too, would come to an end, and that end too quickly.

Mushroomkit was dozing in a scraggly but protective thorn bush, drifting in that odd state between sleep and wakefulness. Her parents were absent, hunting. Her legs were still too short for her to keep up well with them, and both Ravenstep and Long-gaze agreed that she would be safer if she stayed there rather than try to tag along. They would be back by nightfall, they said. Just wait right here.

They never returned. Mushroomkit waited as the sky grew slightly darker, slightly lighter, and then slightly darker again. She watched as strange silhouettes with skulls for heads and massive black cats with glowing red eyes hunted in the constant dusk which barely marked the indiscriminate passage of time. The screams of the hunters and the hunted reached her small ears, taunting her until she covered them with her paws, squeezing her eyes shut tight. Mushroomkit has always assumed that her parents were killed by Ashen; that is the easiest possibility for her to deal with. The thought of any other alternative was just too painful to bear.

However, as the third day came and there was still no sign of them, Mushroomkit, tired, hungry, thirsty, and scared ventured out of her bush and continued toward Safe Haven alone, drawn intolerably forward by the Call, though her heavy heart weighed her paws down. It was as though the ashen ground below her had absorbed all of her hope like water, the same way it would have swallowed up her parents' blood. She could see her destination in the distance, glimmering like a fallen star, like a green diamond dropped into the soot-covered landscape. She was small enough to avoid drawing much attention from the Ashen, and her pelt allowed her a StarClan blessed camouflage that probably kept her alive.

Now she stands at the base of the rock walls that guard Safe Haven, looking up, up, up into the never-changing heavens. She thinks she sees movement atop the monumental structure, the silhouettes of cats, but she's not sure. "Hello!" she cries out in a small, thin voice, glancing around furtively, hoping that she is not drawing any Ashen toward her with her pleas. Seeing that the coast is clear, at least for now, Mushroomkit turns her muzzle back upward, upping the volume, her tone made of desperation. "Someone please! Hear me! I'm here!"

❀ Mother/Ravenstep ❀

"I miss my mother so much. I look a lot like her, and I'm so glad that I do. As each day passes, the memory of her voice fades a little bit more from my mind, but I will never forget her face. If I ever do, all I have to do is look in a puddle, and its like she's still there, watching me and guiding me.”

❀ Father/Long-gaze ❀

"My father and I shared a special bond; I suppose you could call me daddy's little girl and be entirely accurate, though I don't appreciate such platitudes. He always had a joke to share, and he could always make me laugh. He was the one who kept me and my mother going when the sky seemed dark and hopeless, even before the Call. I ask you: how can I be optimistic and positive about a world which would take someone like that away?"

R O L E P L A Y  E X A M P L E    (A short example from Bryniel)

The cool breeze, tinged with the smell of freed water, ran its fingers through Stix's short, velvety, chocolate colored pelt. The ground felt odd beneath his paws, soft as it was, the grass feeling ticklish on his sensitive pads. The oriental tomcat hadn't realized how accustomed he had grown to the tall walls of stone in twolegplace, the plastic and metal maze of the junkyard, the crevice in the wall that he called home. He might as well have been on an alien planet. Glancing out of his peripheral vision at Bandra, a bit of insecurity flickering in his gaze like a candle in the wind, he regained his courage at her familiarity. At least she seemed to know what she was doing. The world around him, the slopes covered with swaying trees, the kingfisher blue sky, the air so clear and fresh, part of him was sure that if he reached out to touch one of the trees, it would disappear before his searching paw. Opening his mouth, he was just about to ask if she was sure she knew where she was going when the land seemed to fall away on either side of them, revealing the shimmering circle of the lake's surface. The rays from the sun danced across its rippling waves, shattering and breaking on the ridges into a thousand shards of gold. He stopped in his tracks, as though frozen. "Whoah..." he couldn't help but mew, mostly to himself. He had never seen a lake before.

☑ Notes (always, preferred method)

☑ Skype (once we get to know one another a bit better, sure!)

☑ Google Docs (always, I think that'd be fun to try!)

☒ e-mail (I'd rather not)

☑ Chat (if you like this the best, I'll do it, but I'd rather one of the other methods)
